いちばん (ichiban) means “most”, “first” or “number 1”

Also used as a counter word that literally means “number one”, いちばん (ichiban) also means “the most”.  To express that something outranks other actions/things as number one, use いちばん (ichiban).

Form
Noun + (が or は) + いちばん + adjective + desu
Verb (plain form) + (のが or のは) +  いちばん + adjective + desu

Here it is in a full sentence:

寿司すし一番いちばんきです。
Sushi ga ichiban suki desu.
(I like sushi the most.)
Sushi ga ichiban suki desu.

With いちばん, you can mark the compared group with のなかで.

You can specify the group that you are ranking the subject against by marking it with the particle で (de).  For example,

日本にほん料理りょうりなか寿司すし一番いちばんきです。
Nihon ryouri no naka de sushi ga ichiban suki desu.
(Of all the Japanese dishes, I like sushi the most.)

Nihon ryouri no naka de sushi ga ichiban suki desu.

In the above example, のなかで (no naka de) means “among”.  We can drop のなか if we want and just write

日本にほん料理りょうり寿司すし一番いちばんきです。
Nihon ryouri de sushi ga ichiban suki desu.
(Of all the Japanese dishes, I like sushi the most.)

Nihon ryouri de sushi ga ichiban suki desu.

Here is another example with のなかで dropped:

山田やまださんは会社かいしゃ一番いちばんやさしいです。
Yamada-san wa kaisha de ichiban yasashii desu.
(Mr. Yamada is the kindest in the company.)

Yamada-san wa kaisha de ichiban yasashii desu.
